Barely Edible Book Art Contest

"A VERY tasteful art contest"
(Finally, playing with your food is a GOOD (and gooey) thing!)

It's time to play with food! Join township food artists of all ages and flavors in a celebration of art, literature and scrumptious creativity as the IntraDistrict Council of the School District of Haverford Township brings the Barely Edible Book Art Contest back for its fourth year. The contest takes place on Haverford Township Day, Saturday Oct. 6, 2007 at the Brookline Fire House.

Potential contestants should plan to browse the shelves of the Haverford Township Free Library for inspiration and then sift through their pantries and refrigerators for edible art supplies to sculpt or build an artful rendering of a favorite book title, literary character, or book-related play on words. All entries must be completely edible. Both family groups and individuals can enter.

Judging is based on originality, unusual use of food, adherence to the book theme, creativity and appealing design. Remember this is fun! Entry categories are: Kindergarten to third grade, Grades 4-8, high school.

Entries will be on display at the Brookline Firehouse during Haverford Township Day. A banquet of prizes will be awarded at 12 noon. All entries must be at the Firehouse by 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Oct. 6. Darby Road will be closed to traffic after 9:30 a.m. Contestants will have to park on Kathmere Road and walk their entries around to the front of the firehouse. There will be an opportunity for residents pick their favorite entries in the contest. Cast your vote with a 25-cent donation to the Haverford Township Free Library for the "People's Choice Award."

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at an edible book contest?

From 9 to 10 a.m. books must be delivered to the Brookline Firehouse. Prizes will be awarded and presented after parade. Entries on view until 1:00 p.m. After that everyone is invited to "pig out!"

What is an edible book?

That is up to you to decide. Your entry should be book-related in some way. It should be but it is not necessary to be too technical. If it's delicious, so much the better. See entries from a 2002 Book Art festival at http://www.ksbooks.com/books2eat/2002.html. See entries from our own contests on the school district web site.

I have looked at the website and now am alarmed! Those books look elaborate! People are charging money!

Fear not. This is an event for people who like food and books. It's just for fun. We don't want your money.

I feel much better now. What do I do next?

If you plan to make an edible book, let Mary Beth Lauer know (we want to have enough table space) by email lauer@havsd.net or telephone 610-853-5914. E-mail is best if you have a choice. She will tell you to pick up an entry form at the library, the township building, or township recreation center and register your name
